Mimsy’s Craft Barbecue
When it comes to Texas BBQ you often hear words like “best” and “Top 50”. Although I haven’t had too much bad Texas BBQ, not all live up the the hype. And what I have also found is that it doesn’t matter where the BBQ joint is located, big city, off the beat and path etc. So when we stubbled upon Mimsy’s Craft Barbecue in Crockett, Texas our expectations where high but guarded.
We were headed back from a hiking adventure at Mission Tejas and were looking for a place to stop for lunch with outside seating since we had the Aussies with us. I had read about a BBQ place called Mimsy’s. They had outside seating and the weather was perfect, so we stopped in.
The outside patio was huge and the inside décor was very cool with all kinds of FFA and music memorabilia (I know a strange combination). The dogs and I settled in while Brian went inside to order. He came back with an amazing spread of house-made sausage, brisket, ribs, creole potato salad, smoked maple sprouts, coconut curry creamed corn and turmeric corn. So, first off, all the meats were top notch and this would have been one of our favorite BBQ places if we had stopped there, however the veggies stole the show. Brian said he could have just eaten a veggie plate and would have been very satisfied. I mean, these veggies were over the top! Not much of a brussels sprouts person? Think again. They were lightly charred and with the maple syrup and smoke flavor… OMG! And the other veggies were equally amazing.
It is a strange day when the veggies steal the show at a BBQ restaurant but at Mimsy’s they did. It’s almost a shame, because I should be writing more about the amazing meats – which they were. So when traveling through East Texas, stop at Mimsy’s, even if it is not a-on the way. You won’t be disappointed. This place lived up to the hype and then some!

My mouth is watering!
Thanks for your blog, nice to read. Do not stop.
Similar experience when heading back to Austin from Carthage (picking up a new puppy). It’s also worth mentioning Mimsy’s raises most of it’s own livestock and the meats are pasture-raised.
I also appreciate Mimsy’s spirit of experimentation. Never in a millions years did I expect a curry coconut cream of corn deliciously served up in a juke-joint in East Texas.
Next time you stop in, peruse the store. Specifically look for brisket burger Pattie’s (4 pack). Even if the store is closed, request them. Best burgers I’ve ever eaten.
These folks can’t stand up e-commerce fast enough! In the meantime, I’ll schedule golf and family visits in the area just as an excuse to eat at Mimsy’s!
