Kerrville Texas

When it comes to Texas, there is a huge variety in the Lone Star State. The state differs dramatically from the piney woods to the Rio Grand valley and from the windy and snowy panhandle to the Gulf coast. But my favorite part of the state is clearly the hill country and Kerrville is deep in the heart of it (go ahead, break out in song).

I guess what I like so much about the hill country is the charm and beauty. Its a great combination of hilly landscape, trees and plenty of rivers and lakes. There are many small towns along the way that offer unique shopping experiences, local dining options or just a genuine feel of a slower country lifestyle. As a young adult, I spent a lot of time in this area boating, camping (you know the tent kind) and tubing down the Guadeloupe River. As a… well, not so young adult… I’ve put many miles on these roads with my motorcycle. Maybe I’ll blog about the Three Twisted Sisters sometime – or that may be better left to my partner in crime aka BIL Mike.

Anyway, lets get to Kerrville. There are a few very good choices for RV parks in Kerrville and we decided on Kerrville-Schreiner Park for our stay at the end of March 2022. I’ll blog about the park later, but the reasons we chose this as our stopping point was the great location adjacent to hiking and all the sites we were interested in seeing. Speaking of convenience, the River Trail spans 6 miles right from the park to the central area of town and meanders along the (Guadalupe) river. This is a great concrete path for hiking and biking. You will sure to be visited by plenty of deer along the way. Across the road on the other side of the park are more traditional wooded trails. We all – paws and peeps – enjoyed the hikes.

No trip to the Texas hill country is complete without a visit to Fredericksburg. The small town has a deep German heritage and plenty to do and see. From shops to authentic German fair to local pubs and wineries there’s something for everyone. It’s always a good stop for Shannon to get her inner-German out.

Speaking of wineries and vineyards, there are plenty in this area and we stopped at two of them. Our first stop was a small vineyard called Texas Heritage Vineyard just outside of Fredericksburg. This was a quaint place, where we indulged in a glass or two on the back porch. Our next stop was a much larger and more elaborate vineyard called Augusta Vin. This place is over the top and certainly worth visiting – or having your wedding there. The grounds are pristine and worthy of a few photo ops. That said, our preference is the smaller quaint spots.

When it comes to Kerrville and the Texas hill country, this is only the tip of the iceberg. There is so much to see and do in this beautiful part of Texas. And come hungry because you are sure to find lots of local home cooking along the way. In fact, I just had a flashback of a thick slice of banana blueberry pie! I’m hungry, gotta go now.
